🕯️ Candle Care 101: How to Make Your Candles Last Longer

There’s nothing worse than lighting a brand-new candle… only for it to burn unevenly, tunnel down the middle, or disappear way too fast. The good news? A few simple habits can make your candles burn cleaner, last longer, and smell better every time.

Here’s how to get the most out of every candle you bring home.

✂️ 1. Trim the Wick Before Every Burn

This is the #1 rule of candle care.

Before lighting, trim your wick to about ¼ inch. A shorter wick helps:

  • Prevent large, smoky flames

  • Reduce soot on the jar

  • Create a steady, even burn

Long wicks burn hotter and faster, which wastes wax and shortens your candle’s life.

🕯️ 2. Let the Wax Melt All the Way Across

The first burn sets the memory for your candle.

Always let the wax melt to the edges of the container before blowing it out. This usually takes 2–4 hours depending on candle size.

Why it matters:

  • Prevents tunneling (that deep hole down the middle)

  • Helps your candle burn evenly for its whole life

Blowing it out too soon is the main cause of wasted wax.

🌬️ 3. Keep Candles Away From Drafts

Airflow affects how your candle burns. Keep candles away from:

  • Fans

  • Open windows

  • Air vents

Drafts can cause flickering flames, uneven melting, and excess smoke.

⏳ 4. Don’t Burn for Too Long at Once

It’s tempting to leave a candle burning all evening, but longer isn’t always better.

Try to keep each burn session between 2–4 hours. Burning too long can:

  • Overheat the jar

  • Cause the wick to mushroom

  • Make the scent fade faster

Letting the candle cool completely before relighting keeps everything balanced.

🧯 5. Use a Snuffer Instead of Blowing It Out

Blowing out a candle can create smoke and push melted wax around the wick.

A candle snuffer:

  • Reduces smoke

  • Keeps the wick centered

  • Helps maintain a cleaner scent

Plus, it just feels a little luxurious ✨

🧼 6. Keep the Wax Pool Clean

Dust, wick trimmings, and debris in the wax can affect how your candle burns. Before lighting, make sure the surface is clean and clear.

A clean wax pool = a cleaner, brighter burn.
